While I'm not the biggest fan of Italian food (aside from pizza, obvs), I agreed to try this place out. By the time we got there, we were famished and looking forward to the "garlic" breadsticks. More like croutons sprinkled with garlic powder...I'm sure had we received fresh ones, they would have been a bit more tolerable. Next up was the house salad...with house Italian dressing. The dressing was amazing...typical vinegarette, but with a little bite to it. I enjoyed it much as the vinegar was the mail focus, as opposed to oil and herbs like other places I've been to. And lastly...my entree. I ordered the meat ravioli. The meat-to-noodle ratio was about 1/3. So sad. The first one was crumbly and had no flavor and the next two had a little cheesy flavor to them. Maybe the first was just freezer burned. Pretty sure there is no way these are homemade. Maybe if the sauce had some flavor, they would have been a little more appetizing. The sauce. It tastes like tomato sauce. Nothing else. Not a fan. Boyfran had the steak with mashed potatoes. The steak was cooked medium rare to perfection and was juicy and delicious. The mashed potatoes were fake. W. T. F. I've notice this more and more at restaurants and its really starting to bum me out considering potatoes can be reheated for at least a week and still taste as delicious as the day they were cooked. Overall, I like the old ambiance. It reminds me of a typical casual restaurant, but the food could use a little oomph.

Last evening's meal was a disappointing one. My chicken parmesan was dry, overcooked and overnuked. The hubbs broasted chicken was greasy, flavourless and made with frozen chicken, not fresh. I like frequenting small, family owned businesses, but this one needs help. Chef Ramsay were are you?

I ordered carryout for my wife and I, she wanted spaghetti and meatballs and I got the veal Parmesan. Also had a side salad and bowl of chicken noodle soup. The salad was fresh, and the soup was pretty good including fresh herbs to finish it, although clearly made from soup base as it had that salt lick after taste to it. The Spaghetti and meatballs was OK, but there was way too much pasta for the sauce provided and only 2 meatballs the size of golf balls that were dry but tasted good. My veal, however, had no redeeming qualities. It tasted old and microwaved. The bottom was cooked until almost burned, which left the thin slice of veal as dry as can be and as tough as chewing on a shoe. It is a good thing that I am a huge cheese fan since the veal was so dry and tough, as there was probably over a quarter pound of cheese melted on top, so that ended up getting scraped off the veal (which went to the trash) and became my dinner. Pretty disappointing overall with small bits of good food thrown in. After 35 years I am surprised that the restaurant was so full on a Thursday night if that is the quality of food being served.

A good solid value in food. I really like the bbq ribs, the pasta dishes, and the egg plant parmesan. You don't go there for the decorations or the wait staff. It's genuine Italian. The owner is usually around.

I did not know that queasy fact about the bread, but that fact aside I've always eaten well here. The pasta dishes are of a decent size, if a bit pricey..depending on your wallet. The haddock is always great, my relatives swear it tastes like lobster, whatever it tastes good (as in not overly fishy).

Took my family Saturday night and had a good meal. Nice big place so there was no wait after leaving a competitor that was jammed up. Fast, friendly service. Good value. My wife loved the lasagna. My spaghetti parmesan was good, but maybe needed a little more flavor. My young son loved his meal. Good experience all in all. We will go back.

ok food but when friends worked there during high school they always warned me to only come when they were working, they said theyd get me fresh bread. Since they regularly re-use all of the bread the patrons don't finish at their meal...wow, so nasty.

I was actually going to knock this up a star or two but they wrecked it. We returned with expert recommendations from people we totally trust (my parents). The food was much better this time. We had the broiled haddock which is deliciously lobster-esque with the drawn butter, a piece for each of us. We also split an order of ravioli in tomato basil sauce which, while not homemade quality, was decent. The tomato basil is either improved or my latest weird red sauce obsession has my taste buds reading differently now. We asked for double meatballs and they were fantastic, clearly homemade thank the good lord. The chicken noodle soup starter we each ordered was great, so much better than the soup last time. Depth of flavor, the noodles were just ok but wow a ton of great chicken, served piping hot which is a must. The soft, overly garlicked breadsticks are still not my thing but I am a sucker for the hard breadsticks and butter. Our waitress was less stellar than last time though. Not super knowledgable nor was she speedy. She was fine but I remember the last visit really being blown away by the attentiveness of our waitress. She brought only regular order of meatballs then insisted she had to charge me more than just double the meatball rate for two more meatballs. Ummmm ok. Whatevs. Just bring me the freaking things before the meal gets cold ok? We took home plenty of leftovers which was the point. So why is my rating lowered??? They hit my number one pet peeve, they would not accept my coupon. In teeny tiny itty bitty writing on the coupon it states you can only use it Sunday through Thursday. Fair enough. But then came the piece de resistance, the waitress tells us they have OTHER coupons that do not have the restriction and you can use them anytime but NO she will not honor this particular one and we have to pay full price. WTF???? Why would you even tell us that? I was hot but I smiled politely, paid full price and sauntered off determined I will not return to this scam artist half assed place. What a joke! Talked to the manager via phone and was told that what the waitress told me is "technically correct" but that he was "sorry it was put to us like that". He was angry at our waitress for spilling the beans but offered nothing in terms of a solution for me, no ideas whatsoever, just the half hearted almost apology and a comment that he hoped I would return. Ummm based on what incentive? Someone needs lessons in customer service, speaking as someone who is in customer service.

Amantea is one of those restaurants that has been around for a long time, but doesn't get too much traffic because of its location. All along Ford Rd in Canton, MI, is where all the restaurants are at, not a mile-ish northwest of Ford Rd in a residential city, that you would really only go there on purpose. Nonetheless, we love Amantea and we always talk about why we don't go there more often every time we're there enjoying the better-than-most Italian food, technically making the 25 minute drive worth it, but not always motivated enough to do so. The walls are painted with scenes of the Italy countryside, making it seem like you're there. Their garlic Parmesan bread is amazing - covered with lots of minced garlic and thin slices of tomato. I do have one complaint. The carpet needs some serious TLC. It smells "old". Although it is off the beaten path, I would recommend Amantea to anyone who asks.

Possibly the worst restaurant I've ever been to. My girlfriend and I went here on a Friday night after my father gave us a gift card he won in a golf outing. Decor - Right away I was disappointed with the feel of the place. The decor was bland and very brown, looked like something I'd find in a 70's suburban home. Classic rock was being played, for whatever reason.. There was absolutely nothing Italian about it for a place that calls itself an Italian restaurant. We were seated at a table that had paper place mats with ads on them, that's something I've only seen in places like Big Boy and Dennys, not Italian restaurants that have $12+ entrees. Food - We looked over the menu but decided to try out the specials that were printed on standard printer paper and torn in half to print two menus on one paper, elementary school students hand in more presentable homework than the menu we were handed in a business handled by adults. I decided to try the crab stuffed shrimp and rice while my girlfriend tried out the tri-color tortellini with tomato basil sauce. I was handed a small plate with 2 small spoon fulls of rice spread across it topped with 6 regular sized shrimp smeared with crab paste, 6 shrimp and about 2 ounces of rice.....for $13. My girlfriends plate was equally a joke, she got 2 bites in and gave up saying it was uninspired, tasted like they used boxed grocery store pasta, and had runny sauce. Service - It wasn't busy (no surprise) and yet our server seemed to be lost. She only came by to ask how we were doing once and randomly brought my girlfriend a box to put her food in. She also walked away and didn't take my credit card and gift card when I tried to give it to her after giving us the bill. I tipped her out of pity. The experience wasn't totally awful though, I had a gift card and thankfully didn't have to spend much of my own money on this dump

The worst Chicken Parmesan i have ever had. It was drowning in not so good cheese and when i found the Chicken it was Burnt tasting, soggy and didn't even taste like Chicken at all. The Antipasto salad was not so good either i would rather get it from any where else. From a past experience i don't like the ravioli here either. Overall the Italian food is not so good. I have heard the ribs are good but i won't try them because i don't like ribs anyway. The decor is Way outdated. Almost everything could be updated. There are a bunch of better Italian Restaurants in the area i would rather eat at.

Been coming here for 20+ years, as has my family and my wife's family. Never had a problem with any of the food. Good Italian food at very reasonable prices. Portions are more than ample. (I usually take leftovers home) The only issue I've found is with less than attentive wait staff, but they usually don't stick around long.

We went here for a family birthday party and I have to say the food we tried was pretty good. My wife and I split the veal parmesan which was plenty. The cooks split it for us and it was covered in flavorful sauce and a thick blanket of mozzerella cheese. We left full with no left overs. I tried the cole slaw, as it was recommended in one of the other reviews. It was unique but I didn't care fore it. It wasn't creamy and had more of a vinager taste to it. The bread was was oven hot and freshly baked. I would eat here again if it wasn't a 40 minute drive for us.

The place reminds me of somewhere the gparents would go to eat, classic good food w a comfortable atmosphere. Some of the staff are far to crabby but the food makes up for it. The lasagne is rockin but stay away from the chickn parm..meh. They have great salmon

I'm surprised that Amantea has received such poor reviews. First off, I highly doubt the bread thing is true. The store owner, Dominic, is always there and seems to run his place for employment with an iron fist. If it is true, it's probably a one time thing with former employee. I used to frequent this place, and have never had any issues regarding the food. Secondly, you get a TON of food for your money. You always leave Amantea full and satisfied. Third. The chicken parmigiana is absolutely incredible. You get a beautiful piece of chicken topped with their excellent meat sauce and all brought together with a big layer of Parmesan cheese. I always got the cole slaw, which I thought was unique and delicious. The vegetable soup is always good and always hot. Not mention you always need a nice amount. In conclusion, Amantea has great Italian-American comfort food. Dinner will cost you about 30 bucks for two people, but with the amount of food and great service you get. It's totally worth it.

Oh man, people from the Westland, Garden City and Livoina areas rave about the old school authenticity of this place, but on a recent visit with Dr. Wife, I was severely let down. When you walk into Amantea's you have this feeling that it's going to be a real winner. Your eyes immediately feast on old school tables, those red vinyl backed chairs from the 70s, cloudy wallpaper to imitate Italian frescos and Dean and Frank blaring from the speakers. Started with the house Chianti, bread and a side salad with the house Italian. That stuff was just o.k., which started to make me a little nervous, but everyone told me: "Dan, wait till you have the sauce. It's so good you'll want to take it home." I question why I call some of them friends. The sauce was a let down. I had the meat sauce with a plate of mixed ravioli, which were clearly mass packaged from a food distributor. Over sized, over stuffed and covered in this watery, bland tomato sauce with no real flavor. My wife opted for a tortellini is a tomato basil sauce that was much the same. Big let down, sort of smoky and not worth heading back. P.S. to my friends who told me this was a winner ... Call me for a list of real Italian restaurants within 10 miles of this one.

Never do a party here. They messed up big time-we had a surprise party and they put us in the middle of the restaurant after telling us we had the banquet room. Manager was nasty when we complained.

Happy New Year! We had our 2nd News Years Eve dinner here because the In-laws like the price and location. This year was much better that last years experience. First, the server we had this year was fantastic. She was there to take the drink order with in 2-3 minutes, even when 2 in our group were late arrivals she was quick to take their drink order. She was very attentive with refilling the bread basket ans well as keeping up with Iced Tea and water glasses. Great Job! Bread sticks are good and the server kept the basket full at all times. (There was no chance of reusing bread sticks from us as we ate them all) I as well as 2 others ordered the Veal Parmigiana, Veal patty was good swimming in cheese. Probably too much cheese but the cheese is good so it isn't a real issue. My wife ordered the Egg Plant parmigiana and had a hard time getting to the egg plant...she said too much cheese. But good none the less. No complaints from most of the table (12 of us) except for the one real bad choice. One of us ordered the Stuffed Flounder. NOT GOOD. It was this fine, paper thin piece of fish kind of wrapped around what looked to be a clump of stuffing. The fish was dried out and could not be eaten. We didn't make a fuss we just gave her some of our dishes as every dish was more than enough food for one person so we fixed that with no problem. As others have said not a bad place to eat for average Italian food. Not your top of the line place but remember it is in Garden City and has been there for many many years so they do have a customer base.

I came here for a birthday dinner my cousins were having for my Aunt. There were a few options to choose from and I had chosen the Broasted Chicken. It was nice and crispy. It also came with salad, choice of side of a baked potato or spaghetti, green beans, and desert. Along with Bread. Since there was a bunch of us the staff was very helpful and come around if we need refills on drinks, They also refilled our water pitcher when we didn't even ask.

I'm a fanish! This place is 50/50, either a hit or a miss! You will never know. Yes, the breadsticks are yummy (when hot). AND, the house dressing, is still by far, one of favorities around! My favorite is the Cheese Rav's, with meat sauce, with is usually more so 98% yummy! But... other's that, have joined me their.. have not been, as lucky! Fish dishes, can be the best, but also the worst! Pizza is either great or ok! Service is, well.....average, to so the most! I usually have the Cheese Rav's and I'm pleased! So, if your in the mood for Ravoli's, then this is the place! Otherwise, your on your own!

Great food. Priced well about $12 per (can be cheaper w/ coupons available to print online). Good, consistent service - what more do you want? The chicken noodle soup is worth the trip itself (just ask for it instead of a salad). If I ever get sick my wife (who doesn't cook) better go here and get me a bucket of the soup. Anything they serve "parmesan" is pretty frekin good. The lasagna and ravioli are both tasty. The broiled haddock is very lobster like - good stuff.

**3 1/2 stars** The bad: let's get this out of the way first. I had family coming in from out of town so my cousin and I organized a dinner for anyone who wanted to go. There were 17 in our party so we needed a place that was centrally located, that could accommodate us all. Additionally, we did not want a chain restaurant. My first choice was booked then I remembered Amantea was nearby. I have been there before, but it's been easily 20 years since then. When I called to make the reservation, I was asked if there would be multiple bills or just one. I said there would be multiple, in groups. The waitress immediately had an attitude because the groups were not seated together. I'm sorry, but I see my mom all the time. It's nice of her to pay my bill, but I'm going to sit near the family members I don't get to see on a regular basis. She mentioned several times that she wasn't sure if she would be able to put all the right orders on the correct bills because the groups were split up. I'm no waitress, but I'm pretty sure it's not rocket science and if you're too stupid to assign letters or numbers to each order so you can keep the right orders together, then you've got bigger problems to deal with. As far as I know, all the bills ended up being correct, and the actual service was good, but I'm deducting stars for the attitude. The good: the drinks were delicious and very reasonably priced. I paid $3.50 for a pineapple juice with Malibu rum. A drink I've literally paid twice that amount for at other places. The food was excellent. Good bread and good vegetable soup. I had the mostaccioli with mushroom marinara sauce. The serving was huge - I think I barely ate a third. Everyone at my table had great things to say about their dinners. I will definitely go back, I just hope I have a better server when I do.

I had heard decent things about this place. I was in the mood for seafood and I selected their fried lake perch. I expected it to be decent but I was surprised when it came to the table. It was overcooked and under seasoned. It was so fried that you couldn't tell what type of fish it was. The tartar sauce is Kraft tartar sauce. Seriously?? I could make much better than this myself. I also had their corn with it but it didn't have much flavor and didn't look appealing at all. I was still hungry after this meal. I would have to be convinced before I go back.

I have been going to Amantea since I first moved to Michigan ten years ago. Recently I returned as it had been a few years and I had a taste for some good Italian food. The bruschetta appetizer was wonderful. I'm accustomed to diced tomato on top of bruschetta, so when I saw slices I was afraid the bread would be soggy. Much to my delight, it was crunchy without being over done. The cheese was balanced well with large chunks of garlic and fresh-for-the-season tomato. I will definitely order this again. The salads were fresh and they had no qualms with my special order of crumbled feta and Thousand Island (strange, but tasty). My companion's soup was so good I didn't even get to steal a bite. :) The breadsticks are okay, but could use some sort of complimentary dipping sauce as they aren't soft and oily like Olive Garden's, and they can taste a bit dry/bland on their own. The veal parmesan was good. The serving of veal was huge (almost to a fault). It was crispy and done just right, without a greasy taste and not swimming in oil like some other places serve this dish. The sauce was good (but not stellar); my only complaint is there was an excessive amount of cheese on the dish. This is a strange accusation coming from an avid cheese lover; but I cut some of it away and set it aside; no harm no foul. The side dish was run-of-the-mill spaghetti with a similar tomato-based pasta sauce. The sauce could use a bit more flavor. The best thing on the table, though, was my companion's shrimp alfredo dish. While not in the running for "healthiest meal," it was bursting with flavor, the pasta was done right, and the shrimp was flavorful and plentiful. Service was pleasant, prompt, and relatively attentive without being overbearing. My only complaint in that department was a slightly longer-than-expected wait to get drink refills. The order was taken quickly, she was forthright with recommendations, and the appetizers, food, and check came out and just the right cadence. Decor is admittedly tired, but I don't really count that as a fault. I don't want every restaurant in the world to get a makeover and have bright snazzy colors and shiny signs everywhere. Growing up, some of my favorite spots were still decorated as they were ten and twenty years earlier; this was a comfort for myself and my family as was the bright attitude of the staff there. Amantea recreates for me this experience: comfortable in its own inviting yet slightly dated decor, and lots of repeat-customer charm. To qualify this review: I don't think Amantea is the most amazing Italian food I've had. My overall review takes into account service, ambience, food, and experience. It is a good value for what you get, and I think the experience is grand, as is evidenced by the fact that I'm still making the 35 minute drive there ten years later despite a lot of options in my own backyard.

Easter day went to pick up a carry out. When we opened the food, you could tell it wasn't going to be good. The pizza totally under cooked, the cheese wasn't even melted. The antipasto salad, prep hours before was drenched in water, wilted and some of the lettuce was rotten. Needless to say we had a bowl of ice cream instead. One of the few places open on the holiday. I'll know better next time.

Right when I walked in I noticed this place could use a remodel. It seems to have quite a fan following in the area, so I figured I'd give it a try. I had the gonnichi, and it was generically bland. To me it seemed like something from sams club or something. The sauce was definitely not home made and the gonnichi itself seemed like they came out of a bag as some pieces were still frozen. My fiancé and I are having our engagement party here so I am hoping I have a better experience next time.

Hello Mr. Amantea Broasted Chicken, you are the best in the area! And Mr. and Mrs. Pizza and salad, you are very good too...your offspring lasagna and meatball...outstanding! Love this place. It has been around since I was a pup and I love to bounce on in whenever I am back in Garden City. The value in price, quality, and portion is as good as any restaurant in the Italian genre of Detroit, and the service is hard working and friendly but have no qualms with quipping back at my sometimes smart ass Family (and I love it)! I have done dates, showers, family dinners, and the last time even a wake and they just continue to get it right! I highly recommend Villa Amantea.

Overall good food and I am impressed by some of the liquors the bar stocks. Above average place to take a date However, that being said, the place needs to be renovated. Plastic picnic style table clothes should be immediately removed and replaced with regular table tops or proper linen. The ceiling tiles are old and stained. The restaurant should be proud of its history, but seriously should invest in updating the place.

I'm not from around GC, but my sister is, and this is her FAVORITE place!! The first time I was there, I was blown away by the cole slaw! I've never had ANYTHING like it! Super flavorful without being overpowering. My sister suggested the baked spaghetti and meatballs, which are so amazing! The meatballs are yummy and flavorful, and the spaghetti has yummy gooey cheese in every bite!! The restaurant itself, is ok... I feel like i'm back in the 70's, but it's clean and the staff are always friendly. They always have a nice crowd when i've gone and i've always left happy, full, and with a carry out box!! Prices are really good, they cater to kids too, it's casual attire, and I think it's definitely worth a check out!

We've been going to Amantea for over 30 years and it is always a good Italian meal. For years we would just get the Lasagna which never disapointed, It has a tasty sauce and comes out piping hot and loaded with cheese. We don't go there as much as we used to, but once and a while they entice us out with the coupon deal. I do agree that they are sticklers with the coupons, but we usually saved a bit on our lasagna. Recently we had a Civitan/Lion's Club Christmas dinner and tried some different items. I tried the New York Strip, which came out grey and a little like a steakhouse buffet style with a strange tenderizer flavoring. It was OK, but not what I was anticipating. My Sister had the Broasted Chicken, which was pretty good and had a nice crispy coating. The wife had the usual Lasagna and it was very good as normal. The service was excellent and the meal was pretty good overall. I'm going 3 stars and I'll be back... (Probably for the Lasagna)

Can't even place a carry out order, because the staff is so inept! I don' t know why I keep giving this place a second change, but I think I'm finally DONE! The GOOD news is (which is bad news for Amantea) is that Antonio's will soon (January 2014) have a location in LIVONIA! Hip Hip Horray! Amantea's better shape up or ship out!!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
